LG Electronics will supply a next-generation integrated cockpit solution for a commercial vehicle that is the first in Europe to adopt a Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture. The company plans to strengthen its push into the SDV automotive electronics market by equipping a new Groupe Renault vehicle with technology that integrates control of the instrument cluster and infotainment system into a single platform.
LG Electronics said on the 6th that it will supply a next-generation integrated cockpit solution for Groupe Renault’s electric van, the Renault Trafic E-Tech electric. The vehicle is Europe’s first commercial SDV. SDVs integrate and centrally control key functions using high-performance computers and centralized software. Existing vehicles, by contrast, have operated dozens of electronic control units (ECUs) individually according to their functions.
The solution supplied by LG Electronics integrates control of the instrument cluster, which displays driving information such as speed and warning lights, and the infotainment system, which handles navigation and media playback, in line with the characteristics of SDVs. Information previously displayed separately on the two systems is presented in a consistent screen layout, making it easier for drivers to understand. The solution also supports over-the-air software updates, allowing AI-based advanced functions and other features to be continuously added or improved after the vehicle is delivered.
Automakers can also simplify component configurations and optimize designs by using an integrated solution, thereby lowering production costs.
LG Electronics has leveraged the manufacturing technology and user experience and interface (UX/UI) capabilities it accumulated through its TV, home appliance and mobile businesses to develop instrument clusters and infotainment systems for vehicles. The company has supplied automotive solutions to Groupe Renault for more than a decade and has continued its collaboration, including jointly developing an Android-based in-vehicle infotainment system in 2021.
Building on its partnership with Groupe Renault, LG Electronics plans to expand collaboration in SDV automotive electronics with major automakers in North America, Asia and other key markets.
Eun Seok-hyun, president and head of LG Electronics’ VS Division, said, “Based on close collaboration with global automakers, we will continue to advance the core technologies and solutions needed for the mobility industry’s transition to SDVs.”
