Amid the recent sluggish trend of the KOSPI, the KOSDAQ has been relatively good. Despite the burden of high interest rates, KOSDAQ continues to rise as expectations for the semiconductor industry are reflected.

According to the Korea Exchange on the 9th, the KOSDAQ closed at 892.27 on the 8th. It rose more than 80 points compared to 811.88 on the 8th of last month. Although it has been on the decline for the last two consecutive trading days, it closed at 919.92 on the 6th, recapturing the 900-point level for the first time since July 1 this year (929.35).

The rise is attributed to the expansion of institutional purchases. The institution bought 350.3 billion won on the KOSDAQ last month, and in October, it bought a net 661.1 billion won for two days alone on the 1st and 2nd. Net purchases occurred in September, about twice the amount of purchases made in the month.

The institution’s purchase was directed to the semiconductor manager and the second round of war holding. Recently, institutions’ top net purchases on KOSDAQ included Jusung Engineering, EcoPro BM, and EcoPro. EcoProBM’s stock price rose from 104,800 won on the 8th of last month to 126,500 won on the 8th.

Jusung Engineering closed at KRW 267,500, up 8.08% from the previous trading day on the 8th. On this day alone, Jusung Engineering, which recorded nearly 1 trillion won (988.2 billion won) in transaction value, ranked second in KOSDAQ market capitalization at one point during the day. Kim Joon-young, a researcher at iM Securities, said, “The supply and demand for stocks that benefit from the semiconductor facility investment cycle is concentrated on the small manager. At a time when it is not easy for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to reevaluate their corporate value immediately, attention is being paid to the small manager who is relatively light.”

As realization of profits has become important amid higher interest rates, KOSDAQ is expected to continue to invest mainly in semiconductor stocks. Lee Jae-won, a researcher at Yuanta Securities, said, “The recent good performance of Micron reaffirmed the circular sales structure that leads to large semiconductors as well as artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, substrates, and equipment. We should invest heavily in semiconductor-related stocks.”

The variable is foreign investment. Foreigners sold a net 1.4733 trillion won on the KOSDAQ last month, contrasting with institutions. Until early this month, foreigners were mixed with institutional choices, showing a selling advantage on the KOSDAQ.

However, investor sentiment on the KOSDAQ is still valid at a time when the KOSPI has rarely rebounded, with foreigners buying a net 62.5 billion won on the 8th.
