North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited China on the 24th for the first time in more than a year. A summit with President Xi Jinping seems unlikely.
A government source told Yonhap News on the same day, “Kim arrived in Dandong, Liaoning Province, China through the New Aprok River Bridge.”
Lawmaker Yoon said Kim’s specific schedule in China is not known, but he is expected to return home on the same day after completing his visit to China.
It is known that it is unlikely to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. President Xi is set to attend the 5th plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (20th Plenary Session) in Beijing from the 26th to the 29th.
The purpose of Kim’s visit to China seems to have been focused on the inspection of the recently opened New Amnok River Bridge and the expansion of economic cooperation.
Chairman Kim’s visit to China is the sixth in a year and a month since he visited Beijing in September last year on the occasion of attending an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in China’s anti-Japanese war.
While U.S. President Donald Trump has been pushing for talks with Chairman Kim within the year, attention is also being paid to whether North Korea and China will discuss the North Korea-U.S. summit.
