Samsung Electronics and its labour union are scheduled to resume negotiations on Tuesday, according to a report from Reuters, as both sides seek to avoid what would be the largest strike in the company’s history. The potential walkout, which could involve more than 45,000 workers, has raised concerns about its impact on South Korea’s economy and global supply chains.

The threatened 18-day strike, set to begin on Thursday, occurs during a severe global shortage of memory chips—critical components for AI data centers, smartphones, and laptops. This shortage has recently boosted profits at Samsung and its competitors.

The talks on Monday followed the collapse of an initial round of government-mediated negotiations over pay and bonuses at Samsung, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, which accounts for nearly a quarter of South Korea’s exports. A union representative stated that discussions would continue on Tuesday and noted that the union had been negotiating in good faith. Park Su-keun, chairman of the National Labor Relations Commission, also confirmed that talks would resume on Tuesday, while observing that the two sides remained far apart on Monday.

The union has demanded the removal of a bonus cap set at 50% of annual salaries and the allocation of 15% of annual operating profit to a worker bonus pool, with these terms formalized in contracts. Samsung, according to the union, proposed assigning 9% to 10% of its annual operating profit to bonuses if that profit exceeds 200 trillion won this year, while maintaining the 50% bonus cap.

Adding pressure on the union, a South Korean court partially granted Samsung’s request for an injunction to prevent illegal actions during a strike. The ruling may require thousands of workers to report to work to prevent damage to production materials and facilities. Approximately 47,000 workers had indicated they would join the walkout. A court spokesperson said the two main unions could face daily fines of 100 million won (about $72,000) each for non-compliance, while union leaders could be fined 10 million won per day.

The union issued a statement saying the court ruling would not deter it from striking if talks fail to produce a deal, but pledged to engage seriously in negotiations. Samsung Electronics declined to comment.

Following the court’s ruling, Samsung Electronics shares rose as much as 6.7% in morning trade before closing up 3.88%, outperforming a 0.31% gain in the benchmark KOSPI index. South Korean government officials have increasingly voiced concerns about a potential strike, warning it could pose significant risks to economic growth, exports, and financial markets.
