Kakao Mobility Expands Into AI Warehouse Automation

Kakao Mobility and HD Hyundai XiteSolution have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop an autonomous logistics platform for warehouses and industrial facilities in South Korea.

Under the agreement, Kakao Mobility will provide fleet control and transport management software, while HD Hyundai XiteSolution will supply autonomous industrial vehicles, including unmanned forklifts and other site automation equipment. The companies said they plan to conduct proof-of-concept trials at active logistics sites to test and refine the platform.

The partnership also aims to create a single integrated system capable of managing automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). This initiative extends Kakao Mobility’s previous work in robot delivery and automated valet parking into the industrial logistics sector.

The move marks a strategic expansion for Kakao Mobility as it seeks new growth opportunities beyond ride-hailing. The company faced heavy regulatory scrutiny in South Korea’s mobility market, where it held a 96% market share in 2022. South Korea’s antitrust regulator fined Kakao Mobility US$10.5 million for blocking competitors from accessing its taxi application platform.

The industrial logistics partnership addresses a long-standing challenge for Kakao Mobility since its 2017 spin-off — building sustainable profitability beyond expanding its user base. By entering industrial automation, the company can apply its software and fleet-management expertise in a market with lower regulatory pressure and more stable enterprise revenue streams.

The companies also aim to reduce inefficiencies caused by disconnected data across warehouse operations, transportation, and order management systems. If successful, the platform could position Kakao Mobility at the center of software systems controlling autonomous industrial machines, including unmanned forklifts and mobile robots.

The partnership could also serve as a broader model for consumer software companies seeking expansion into industrial markets where software orchestration increasingly plays a bigger role than hardware itself.
