Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has reaffirmed its support for Tamil Nadu’s electric mobility goals, designating the state as its lead electric vehicle manufacturing base in India and unveiling a skill development tie-up meant to build a workforce ready for next-generation automotive technologies, The New Indian Express reported.

The South Korean carmaker, among Tamil Nadu’s biggest industrial investors and exporters, said it would roll out two new models from its Chennai facility this year, including its first mass-market purpose-built electric vehicle, signalling the state’s rising weight in India’s shift to cleaner transport.

The announcement followed a meeting between Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and HMIL managing director and chief executive Tarun Garg, chief manufacturing officer Gopalakrishnan C S and other company officials at the Secretariat on Wednesday (3 June).

Through an exclusive arrangement with the state, Hyundai will train students and job seekers in fields such as electric mobility, hydrogen-powered transport, robotics, automation, AI-driven manufacturing and smart factory systems.

The programme is slated to begin in December 2027 and will link up with industrial training institutes, polytechnics, engineering colleges and skill centres across the state.

Pointing to the firm’s export record, Garg said over 3.9 million vehicles built in Tamil Nadu have been shipped to more than 150 countries. “This is a testament to Hyundai’s ‘Born in Tamil Nadu, Made for the World’ vision,” he said.

Hyundai has set up the state’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is localising key components. It plans to lift localisation from 82 per cent to 90 per cent over five to six years and raise procurement from local suppliers by about Rs 4,000 crore, expected to create nearly 2,000 jobs.

The company reiterated its commitment to invest more than Rs 26,000 crore in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032.
