DNV AiP for HD Hyundai Type B LPG Tank on VLGCs | 2026 - News and Statistics

DNV has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for a new independent Type B LPG cargo tank design intended for Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), according to a statement from the classification society. The certificate was handed over to HHI Chief Technology Officer Hongryeul Ryu by DNV Regional Manager Vidar Dolonen during the Posidonia trade fair.

The AiP applies to HHI’s design for a 90,000 cubic meter independent Type B containment system for LPG carriers. The use of Type B tanks in VLGCs aims to improve operational safety and maintenance accessibility throughout the vessel’s service life, while also providing shipyards with more flexibility in choosing inner hull materials during the design phase.

Analysis of the new tank design includes crack propagation and fatigue studies, in addition to standard buckling and sloshing analyses typically performed for Type A tanks. The design seeks to maximize structural reliability by preventing surface defects from propagating through the tank wall over its intended lifespan. A partial secondary barrier, configured as a leak path acting as a spray shield over all welded areas, along with four dedicated drip trays per tank, contributes to overall safety. This design package is intended to contain leaks and protect the surrounding hull structure throughout the vessel’s operational life.

HHI’s CTO Hongryeul Ryu commented that the company is advancing safer and more adaptable gas carrier solutions with its first LPG carrier design featuring an independent Type B cargo tank, and that DNV’s AiP builds confidence as the project moves toward practical application.

DNV’s Regional Manager for Korea and Japan, Vidar Dolonen, noted that introducing new containment solutions into established segments requires careful technical scrutiny, and expressed satisfaction that HHI chose to rely on DNV’s engineering insight for the project. He added that the Type B tank opens new design and operating options for the VLGC market as owners seek longer asset lives and aim to meet stricter safety and efficiency requirements, and that DNV looks forward to continuing the cooperation to support the project’s development and realization.

An Approval in Principle is an independent assessment of a concept within a defined framework of requirements, confirming the design’s feasibility and verifying that no significant technical barriers prevent its implementation.
