South Korea’s HD Hyundai is broadening the application of small modular reactor (SMR) propulsion technology from container ships to car carriers. The company’s shipbuilding units, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, have obtained approval in principle from Lloyd’s Register for the conceptual design of a large pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) that uses a molten salt reactor. HD Hyundai managed the vessel’s conceptual design and technical review, while Hyundai Glovis provided operational plans based on its car carrier experience. G-Marine Service conducted assessments from a ship management standpoint, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute evaluated the molten salt reactor technology.

A molten salt reactor is a category of SMR that employs a blend of nuclear fuel and coolant in molten salt form as its fuel. It is regarded as appropriate for offshore nuclear power generation due to its strong safety and efficiency characteristics. An SMR-powered vessel installs a small reactor onboard and uses the energy for propulsion, producing no carbon dioxide during operation and allowing for sustained, high-output performance. HD Hyundai had earlier promoted molten salt reactor-based container ships and has now extended this technology to car carriers.

The global maritime car carrier market is anticipated to expand at an average annual rate of 3.8% from 2024 to 2030, reaching roughly $4.5 billion in 2030, fueled by finished-vehicle exports, electric-vehicle cargo volumes, and demand for environmentally friendly vessels. The European Maritime Safety Agency has indicated that although nuclear power can aid in shipping decarbonization, obstacles related to production, safety, security, education, liability, and insurance systems must be addressed first.

HD Hyundai remarked that it is demonstrating advanced eco-friendly vessel technology in collaboration with major shipping companies and classification societies, and that it will persist in leading the carbon-neutral vessel era through technology development and investment.
