Korean Register (KR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft Korea to collaborate on using artificial intelligence tools to advance digital classification services and broader maritime innovation projects.
As informed, the partnership focuses on embedding AI into core classification and inspection processes. Key initiatives include improving classification services through AI and data use, building an AI-centered vessel data center, and developing new AI-driven digital business models.
The two organizations also plan to expand generative AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot and introduce AI agents aimed at improving productivity, quality, and operational efficiency.
A major technical focus is the development of AI-assisted ship design optimization and a data-driven maritime platform that can support more advanced engineering and classification capabilities. This is intended to strengthen digital transformation across the shipbuilding and maritime sector.

The agreement builds on a previous MoU, signed in 2023, that established the foundation for digital transformation using cloud migration and AI-ready infrastructure built on Azure AI and Microsoft 365 tools.
The new phase moves toward an “AX-driven” model, emphasizing fully AI-centered classification services, tailored maritime AI solutions, and new digital business ecosystems.
