Street cheering for the second Group-stage match between South Korea and Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to kick off at 10 a.m. on June 19, will take place at three locations in central Seoul: Gwanghwamun, Yeouido, and Myeongdong. As with the first match against the Czech Republic, which began at 11 a.m. on June 12, the game starts in the morning, so office workers at companies near the cheering venues are again expected to gather in large numbers.
According to reporting compiled by The Seoul Economic Daily on June 18, the Korea Football Association (KFA), together with KT and the Red Devils, will hold a cheering event for the national team’s match against Mexico at Gwanghwamun Square on June 19. The national team’s game will be broadcast through the media wall at KT’s Gwanghwamun West building and a large screen set up by the KFA. The association plans to provide 9,000 official cheering seats that day. However, if ordinary citizens join the street cheering in addition to the cheering squad, up to 20,000 people are expected to gather at the site. During the first match, despite forecasts of 6,000 attendees, more than 10,000 people came to Gwanghwamun Square as nearby office workers arrived during their lunch break to watch the game.
A street cheering event will also be held in Yeouido. Korea Investment & Securities, a subsidiary of Korea Investment Holdings, said it will conduct street cheering using a large electronic display at “KIS SQUARE,” the outdoor plaza in front of its headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul. Unlike the first match, when cheering was held only in the plaza in front of the headquarters, the company plans to expand the cheering area to three lanes of the road ahead for this second match. A separate cheering space will also be set up on the road across from the headquarters, for a total of three cheering zones. A large LED TV will be additionally installed. Korea Investment & Securities expects 1,500 to 3,000 citizens to gather for the Mexico match street cheering.
While two locations operated during the Czech Republic match, one more cheering venue will be added starting from the Mexico match. Shinsegae Department Store said it will hold a large-scale street cheering event at “Shinsegae Square,” the ultra-large media facade at its main store in Myeongdong, Seoul. Shinsegae Department Store said it will also hold a street cheering event during the third Group-stage match against South Africa on June 25.
Many citizens are again expected to take part in the street cheering for this match, but the variable is the weather. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, a low-pressure system will pass over the country starting June 19, bringing heavy rain centered on the southern regions. The Seoul area is forecast to see showers from the afternoon, which is not expected to significantly affect the street cheering, but the timing of precipitation could change depending on the movement speed of the rain clouds.
