LG Energy Solution (373220.KS) has surpassed 100,000 global patent applications, becoming the first battery company in the world to reach the milestone.

The company said Tuesday that its global patents exceeded 100,000 on an application basis as of last month. Registered patents totaled 59,000.

LG Energy Solution emphasized that it is the first battery company in the world to surpass 100,000 global patent applications.

After its annual research and development (R&D) spending topped 1 trillion won for the first time in 2023, LG Energy Solution invested a record 1.3277 trillion won last year.

The company’s flagship patents include Safety Reinforced Separator (SRS), which coats the separator surface with ceramic particles and a polymer binder; Double Layer Coating (DLD), the world’s first application to the anode; and carbon nanotube (CNT) pre-dispersion technology.

“The 100,000 patents are not simply a number but the fruit of relentless research and development and challenges,” said Lee Han-sun, executive vice president and head of the patent group at LG Energy Solution. “Going forward, we will continue to accelerate future growth based on original technology and premium patents, and create a virtuous cycle in which fair compensation for technological innovation leads to new innovation.”
