People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk sharply criticized the Democratic Party’s push for a “fabricated indictment special counsel,” saying illegal North Korea remittances, the Daejang-dong development corruption case, and election law violations are “blatant and shameless crimes from which imprisonment cannot be avoided, no matter how much prosecutors are hounded and the judiciary is intimidated.”
Jang made the remarks Monday while holding an on-site Supreme Council meeting in front of the former presidential office in Seoul. “Right now, President Lee Jae-myung has nothing on his mind but avoiding prison,” he said.
Jang stressed that Lee “is trying to erase his own crimes by appointing a special counsel himself.” He added, “In short, he wants to have a special prosecutor seize the indictment from the judge’s hands and tear it up himself.”
“He is terrified of going to jail, but apparently not at all afraid of the public,” Jang said. “Withdrawing the prosecution is not merely about erasing Lee Jae-myung’s crimes — it is the last tollgate on the road to a Lee Jae-myung dictatorship.”
“The moment the criminal Lee Jae-myung tears up the indictment with his own hands, an all-powerful dictatorship will begin in earnest,” he continued. “This country will become the Democratic People’s Republic of South Korea, where the supreme dignity Lee Jae-myung and his pro-Lee factions monopolize wealth and power.”
Jang also took aim at the constitutional amendment bill expected to be tabled at the plenary session that day, dismissing it as “nothing more than a political scheme to extend the Lee Jae-myung dictatorship.”
“President Lee Jae-myung and this administration have so far ignored the Constitution and enacted all sorts of unconstitutional laws,” he said. “Why try to revise a Constitution they don’t even abide by?”
He emphasized, “If they want to amend the Constitution, President Lee Jae-myung must first declare that he will not seek another term. He must immediately withdraw the special counsel bill on prosecution cancellation, which is the epitome of unconstitutionality.”
Jang added, “Deliberation and debate in the National Assembly must come first, followed by national consensus. We firmly reject the Lee Jae-myung administration’s push for a dictatorial constitutional amendment.”
