RINA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hanwha Group with the aim of promoting the adoption of advanced battery hybrid propulsion systems in the maritime sector, particularly in the Ro-Ro ferry segment.

As the industry accelerates innovation to meet maritime decarbonisation targets, it reflects a broader shift toward cleaner and more sustainable technologies. As explained, the new collaboration aims to accelerate the transition to low-emission vessels by leveraging technologies that enable the shift from traditional internal combustion propulsion systems to advanced hybrid battery solutions – applicable to both newbuilds and retrofit projects for existing vessels.

By combining the hardware and systems expertise of the Hanwha group with RINA’s certification and regulatory know-how, the partners seek to deliver a comprehensive end-to-end solution for next-generation propulsion.

This agreement reflects the increasing pace of innovation required to meet the maritime sector’s decarbonisation targets. By combining RINA’s expertise in classification and regulatory compliance with Hanwha’s advanced technological capabilities, we are ideally positioned to promote safe, efficient, and scalable hybrid propulsion solutions for the global fleet.

…noted Simone Manca, North Asia Marine Vice President, RINA.

Within the collaboration, Hanwha Power Systems will act as the lead integrator, overseeing overall vessel design and system integration. In addition, it will combine Hanwha Aerospace’s marine energy storage systems with Hanwha Engine’s propulsion engine technologies, using its own engineering expertise to deliver an advanced battery-hybrid propulsion vessel.

Hanwha Aerospace also aims to enhance safety and reliability by applying aerospace-grade energy technologies to marine energy storage systems, while Hanwha Engine will contribute its medium-speed engine expertise to optimize propulsion performance, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions.

As stated, RINA will play a key role in verifying regulatory compliance and technical integrity, providing both classification and statutory certification services.

In addition, drawing on its experience in the ferry sector, RINA will support market analysis to help guide development within this segment.

This collaboration brings together Hanwha’s core capabilities across energy‑equipment, battery systems, and engine integration creating strong technological synergy. Through our partnership with RINA, we will secure reliable technologies and strengthen our presence in the global eco‑friendly vessel market.
