Coupang Q1 2026: Recovery from Data Incident and WOW Membership Trends - News and Statistics

In its first-quarter earnings call, Coupang provided an update on its recovery following a recent data incident, as reported by The Motley Fool. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Bom Suk Kim, stated that January was the lowest point for Product Commerce revenue growth, with each subsequent month showing year-over-year improvement, and the pace of that improvement accelerated through February and March.

Kim emphasized that the recovery is driven by the same factors that have defined the business since the launch of Rocket Delivery over a decade ago, including a focus on customer experience. He noted that the vast majority of WOW members remained with the company and continued to increase their spending at double-digit rates during the period. Among those who left, most have returned and resumed their previous spending levels.

By the end of April, Coupang had recovered nearly 80% of the decline in WOW memberships that followed the incident, through returning members and new sign-ups. New WOW sign-ups and churn rates have returned to historically stable levels. Kim cautioned that year-over-year revenue growth will take time to fully reflect the underlying recovery, but the revenue growth trajectory from January to March is running ahead of historical patterns, and comps are expected to continue improving throughout the year.

Regarding margins, Kim identified two distinct factors pressuring profitability in the quarter. First, customer vouchers issued in response to the incident are one-time in nature, with the bulk of the impact contained to the first quarter and a modest tail into early Q2. The company continues to rely on principles of customer obsession, operational excellence, and disciplined capital allocation to navigate the period.
