HD Hyundai and Schneider Electric Collaborate on Offshore Floating Data Centre Technology - News and Statistics

HD Hyundai has entered the floating data centre sector through a new partnership with Schneider Electric. The agreement, as reported by Splash247, focuses on the joint development of offshore digital infrastructure technology.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the shipbuilding holding company within HD Hyundai, signed a memorandum of understanding with Schneider Electric. The collaboration aims to jointly create infrastructure for floating data centres, which are offshore floating structures designed to house servers and supporting equipment.

According to HD Hyundai, the floating data centre concept could address two major challenges faced by land-based data centre development: the scarcity of suitable locations and the high expenses associated with cooling. Other South Korean shipbuilders are also exploring this emerging market.

Schneider Electric contributes expertise in power, cooling, and energy management for hyperscale data centres and AI infrastructure. HD Hyundai brings its capabilities in floating structure design and offshore engineering.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will assess the infrastructure and technical requirements necessary for operating data centres at sea. They will develop solutions tailored to offshore platform environments, with a focus on integrating data centre power and cooling systems with floating offshore platform technologies.

The partners also intend to exchange information on emerging floating data centre technologies and identify additional joint research and development opportunities.

Kim Hyung-kwan, chief executive of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, indicated that the company is accelerating the development of offshore data centre technology, building on its accumulated design and construction expertise in shipbuilding and floating structures. He commented that through this collaboration, the two companies aim to advance core technologies capable of reliably implementing large-scale, high-density computing infrastructure at sea.
