According to a leak, Samsung is planning a successor to the SmartTag 2 (pictured here).
Samsung may unveil the rumored SmartTag 3 alongside the Galaxy S26 FE, three years after launching its predecessor. While details remain scarce, the new tracker could address SmartTag 2’s aging Bluetooth standard and limited crowdsourced network.
It’s been three years since Samsung launched SmartTag 2 ($54 at Amazon), which has consistently been rated as a solid Bluetooth tracker. It integrates seamlessly with Samsung’s SmartThings Find network, making it easy to locate tagged items from a Galaxy phone. One of its biggest advantages is its exceptionally long battery life, typically between 500 and 700 days on a replaceable CR2032 battery. It features a built-in keyring hole, making it easy to attach to items, among other things.
But it does have its drawbacks, one of which is that it only works with Samsung Galaxy devices, making it unsuitable for iPhone users or owners of other Android brands. Its crowdsourced tracking network is also smaller than Apple’s Find My network because it relies solely on nearby Samsung devices, which can result in slower or less frequent location updates in areas where there are less Galaxy phones. Furthermore, the supported Bluetooth 5.3 standard is now rather outdated. That said, reliable leaker Roland Quandt has just hinted that a successor model, possibly the SmartTag 3, is coming soon.
Although sparse on details and unconfirmed, it does raise hope that, if true, it may correct some of the predecessor’s shortcomings. Either way, time will tell as we draw closer to the launch of the Samsung S26 FE, of which the launch date is uncertain. Some say that it could be as early as July 22 at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, where Samsung is expected to unveil a slew of new devices. Others say it could be sometime between September-October, which is when Samsung has traditionally released its FE smartphones, such as the Galaxy S25 FE ($635 at Amazon).
