Samsung Electronics has initiated a workforce reduction across its U.S. consumer electronics business as it relocates the headquarters of Samsung Electronics America (SEA) from New Jersey to Texas. The company confirmed that 739 positions at its facility in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, are affected by the corporate move. While the company stated that a majority of the impacted workforce has been offered relocation opportunities, it declined to disclose the exact number of employees who were severed.
Beyond the New Jersey headquarters, the restructuring has spilled into the company’s existing regional hubs. Approximately 100 employees at Samsung’s Plano, Texas office, primarily within its mobile communications division—have also been laid off. Internal company documents indicate that staff were formally briefed on an enterprise-wide workforce reduction on June 30, with management signaling that the operational consolidation would have a significant structural impact across the North American organization.
The sudden corporate migration comes less than a year after SEA moved into its newly developed Englewood Cliffs campus, which housed roughly 1,200 employees. Public LinkedIn disclosures from exiting staff members confirm that the departures include senior sales, product, and marketing executives. Samsung stated that the headquarters transition would inevitably trigger shifts in headcount, citing a mix of employee relocation rejections and a strategic reorganization of specific corporate functions to better match business priorities.
The corporate reset highlights a widening performance divergence between Samsung’s primary business divisions. While the company’s semiconductor arm is riding an explosive wave of AI-driven chip demand, its consumer-facing mobile division is facing severe headwinds from intensifying market competition and escalating component costs. Samsung clarified that this relocation does not signal a broader, global consumer product restructuring, but is explicitly designed to integrate its teams into Texas’ expanding technology and artificial intelligence ecosystem.
As of late last year, Samsung Electronics maintained a U.S. headcount of 11,770 workers across its consumer electronics and semiconductor divisions. In a related corporate development, the tech giant noted that separate personnel shifts at its IT services subsidiary, Samsung SDS America—affecting up to 179 roles in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey—are tied directly to its own concurrent North American headquarters relocation rather than broader corporate layoffs.
