An active-duty police officer, known as the real-life model for detective character “Ma Seok-do” in the action film “The Roundup,” was fined by a lower court on charges of drunk driving.
Lee Sung-yeol, a single judge at the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 25, sentenced Yoon, a police inspector who was indicted on drunk driving charges under the Road Traffic Act, to a fine of 6 million won on the 21st.
The court found Yoon guilty but said it imposed a fine after considering factors including that he admitted to the offense and showed remorse, and that he had no prior criminal record.
Yoon, who worked at the Seoul Suseo Police Station, was indicted without detention in April on charges of causing a collision while driving after drinking near Gangnam Severance Hospital in Seoul on November 24 last year.
At the time, Yoon’s blood alcohol level was above 0.08%, the threshold for license revocation. There were no casualties from the accident, and Yoon was relieved of his duties following the incident.
Earlier, prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of one year and six months for Yoon at the closing trial.
Appointed to the police force in 1997, Yoon primarily handled violent crime investigations. He is also known as the real-life motif for detective “Ma Seok-do,” the protagonist of “The Roundup.” Actor Ma Dong-seok, who starred in and produced “The Roundup,” is said to have conceived the work by researching the real-life experiences of detectives.
