LG Electronics has established a functional materials production line in Haiphong, Vietnam, accelerating its push into the global business-to-business (B2B) market. The company plans to actively respond to demand in emerging markets by linking the line with its domestic plant in Changwon.
LG Electronics (066570.KS) said on the 23rd that it recently began operating a production line for LG PuroTec™, a glass-powder-based functional material, and Easy-Clean enamel at its Haiphong production subsidiary in Vietnam. The Haiphong line spans 3,200 square meters (about 970 pyeong) and has an annual production capacity of 2,000 tons of materials.
With this, LG Electronics has secured a total annual production capacity of 6,500 tons, including its existing LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province (4,500 tons per year). Based on the production systems in Changwon and Haiphong, the company plans to stably supply products not only to North America and Europe but also to the Global South markets where demand is surging, such as India and Southeast Asia, while enhancing its delivery competitiveness.
LG PuroTec, the main product, is an antimicrobial material added in small quantities to plastics or paints to prevent microbial contamination. With minimal alteration to raw materials, it is applied across a wide range of industries, including home appliances as well as building materials, sanitary products, food packaging materials, and medical equipment.
Process upgrades were also carried out to ensure quality and supply stability, the core competitiveness in B2B. The Haiphong line has automated about 80% of the entire process, from raw material input to shipment. It applies precise temperature control technology to the high-temperature melting process to reduce variance, and blocks the entry of foreign substances through refractory erosion prevention technology.
Functional materials are a new growth business that LG Electronics has targeted. Sales from the related business have more than doubled every year since 2023, when they began in earnest, driving performance. The company has already completed registration under the stringent safety regulations of the United States and Europe, and has secured about 420 related patents. The outlook for the downstream market is also bright. According to a global market research firm, the global antimicrobial agent market is projected to grow rapidly from about $3.66 billion this year to $7.29 billion in 2032.
