Boston Dynamics, the robotics affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, on Thursday released a YouTube video showing its humanoid robot “Atlas” development model in action. Atlas comes in two versions: a development model for deployment in manufacturing sites and a research model for testing core functions. Hyundai AutoEver (307950.KS) hit the daily upper limit during Wednesday’s trading session. The rally is attributed to heightened expectations for commercialization after Boston Dynamics, a robotics affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, released a video showing its humanoid robot “Atlas” development model performing gymnastics maneuvers.
According to the Korea Exchange, as of 3:05 p.m., Hyundai AutoEver was trading at 592,000 won, up 29.97% from the previous session, hitting the daily upper limit. Hyundai Mobis (012330.KS) and Hyundai Glovis (086280.KS) also rose 15.52% and 8.68%, respectively.
The strength in Hyundai Motor Group affiliates’ share prices is seen as reflecting expectations for the robotics business. On the 5th local time this month, Boston Dynamics released a video on YouTube showing the operation of the Atlas humanoid robot development model. The video captured the Atlas development model performing gymnastics maneuvers. Atlas is divided into a research model for testing core functions and a development model to be deployed on actual manufacturing sites, and this is reportedly the first time the operation of the development model has been unveiled.
Robotics control is cited as one of Hyundai AutoEver’s future growth engines. Although specific roles and timelines in the robotics field have yet to be disclosed, the securities industry observes that Hyundai AutoEver’s role is likely to expand during the transition to physical artificial intelligence (AI), given that the company has been responsible for building IT systems within the group.
“Considering that the Robot Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) is scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year, and the timeline for the full-scale deployment of Atlas at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia, U.S., in 2028, Hyundai AutoEver’s role within the robotics business will gradually become more concrete in the second half of the year,” said Ma Gun-woo, an analyst at Heungkuk Securities. “Starting from this, there is a high possibility that physical AI momentum will resurface.”
