The Cheongju District Court has sentenced a woman in her 50s to prison for habitually abusing her daughter for nearly a decade.

According to legal circles on the 26th, the Cheongju District Court recently sentenced A, a woman in her 50s who was indicted on charges of violating the Child Welfare Act, to two years in prison.

A was found to have struck her daughter, then 8 years old, on the head twice with a shower head at their home in Cheongju in 2020 because the child had come home late from school. She then brought a knife from the kitchen and threatened, “Should I kill you and go to prison?”

In early 2023, at a community service center, A cut her daughter’s hair with scissors and made her kneel with both hands raised for two hours, saying “time is gold,” because the daughter had yielded her place in line to another person.

In addition, the abuse was found to have been repeated from 2015 until recently, including jabbing the daughter’s calf with a pencil because she performed poorly in her studies, and ramming into the daughter from behind while riding a bicycle because the child had failed to properly find a meeting place.

The court stated that “the defendant has a prior record of being penalized for child abuse, and the victim has still not recovered from the psychological shock.”

It further ruled that “although the victim stated that she does not want the defendant to be punished, there were circumstances in which the defendant pressured her into a settlement by using the withdrawal of financial support as leverage, so this was reflected only in a limited manner in sentencing.”
