Samsung Electronics has begun verifying the performance of a high-efficiency heat pump heating and cooling system that can be applied to apartments and other multi-unit housing. The company plans to confirm whether existing gas boilers can be replaced with electric-based heat pumps and to secure the basic data needed to expand adoption in Korea’s multi-unit housing.

On the 27th, Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) said it had installed its “Eco Heating System (EHS) All-in-One” at the Samsung C&T Housing Performance Research Institute in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and began field testing this month. In an environment created to be identical to an actual apartment, the company will comprehensively check heating and cooling performance, hot water supply performance, energy efficiency, power consumption, noise, and ease of use.

In particular, Samsung Electronics plans to focus on verifying how its heating and hot water supply performance compares with existing gas boilers and whether it delivers energy savings. The data secured through the field test will be used as material for developing multi-unit housing heat pump products and expanding adoption going forward.

The EHS All-in-One used in the field test is a product Samsung Electronics sells in the European market. Using a single outdoor unit, it simultaneously implements an “air-to-air” method that directly cools the air and an “air-to-water” method that heats water for use in floor heating and hot water supply.

Existing domestic residential heat pumps were mainly used for floor heating and hot water supply, requiring a separate air conditioner for cooling. The EHS All-in-One is characterized by integrating cooling, floor heating, and hot water supply functions into a single system.

It also applies heat recovery technology that reuses waste heat generated during the cooling process to produce hot water. This method uses heat that was discharged outside during indoor cooling in the summer for hot water supply, reducing power consumption.

For the refrigerant, it applies R32, which has a global warming potential about 68% lower than R410A, widely used in existing cooling devices.

As reducing carbon emissions in the building sector has recently emerged as a major challenge, there is a growing move to replace fossil fuels used for heating and hot water supply with high-efficiency electric heat pumps. In Korea as well, the government is reviewing plans to expand heat pump adoption from detached houses to apartments and other multi-unit housing.

“This field test does not stop at confirming product performance but is a project to verify whether heat pumps can realistically replace existing gas boilers in an actual multi-unit housing environment,” said Lim Sung-taek, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances (DA) Business Division. “We will expand technology development and adoption for the transition to electric-based heating and cooling in multi-unit housing and for carbon neutrality in the building sector.”
