Samsung Electronics (005930) has officially begun real-world performance verification of a high-efficiency heat pump heating and cooling system designed to replace existing gas boilers in South Korean apartment complexes and other multi-unit dwellings. This demonstration is expected to serve as a critical test in determining whether the country’s gas boiler-centric residential heating culture can be shifted to an electricity-based model.<\/p>\n
Samsung Electronics announced on the 27th that it has installed its integrated heat pump system, the ‘EHS All-in-One,’ at the Samsung C&T Residential Performance Research Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and began testing this month under conditions identical to those of an actual apartment.<\/p>\n
The core objective of this verification is to precisely assess heating performance and energy savings compared to existing gas boilers. Samsung Electronics plans to comprehensively measure cooling and hot water supply performance, power consumption, noise levels, and user convenience, using the data as a foundation for the future deployment of heat pumps in apartment complexes.<\/p>\n
The ‘EHS All-in-One’ deployed for testing is an integrated solution currently sold in the European market. The product’s standout feature is its ability to simultaneously handle air cooling, underfloor heating, and hot water supply with a single outdoor unit. Existing residential heat pumps in South Korea primarily use an Air-to-Water (A2W) method, providing only heating and hot water, which required the separate installation of an air conditioner for summer cooling. In contrast, the EHS All-in-One integrates direct cooling via an Air-to-Air (A2A) method with A2W heating and hot water supply, addressing year-round heating and cooling demands.<\/p>\n
Heat recovery technology has also been applied to maximize energy efficiency. The system recycles waste heat generated during summer air cooling for hot water production rather than discarding it. Under Samsung’s own test conditions, the company confirmed the effect of utilizing more than double the thermal energy compared to conventional methods, thereby reducing power consumption.<\/p>\n
The product also represents a step forward in environmental performance. It adopts R32 eco-friendly refrigerant, which has a global warming potential (GWP) approximately 68% lower than the R410A refrigerant primarily used in existing cooling equipment. Amid tightening refrigerant regulations in line with global environmental policies, this is seen as a factor that can contribute to the carbon-neutral transition of apartment complexes.<\/p>\n
Based on the data secured through this verification, Samsung Electronics plans to develop products optimized for South Korea’s apartment environment and to formulate a concrete deployment strategy. Particularly as the South Korean government reviews policies to shift electric heating beyond detached houses to focus on apartment complexes, this demonstration project is expected to serve as a benchmark for precise data needed to achieve carbon neutrality in the nation’s building sector.<\/p>\n
