Hyundai Motor’s (005380.KS) labor union launched another strike on the 29th amid stalled wage negotiations this year. With differences over key issues between labor and management remaining unresolved, and a collective summer vacation scheduled for next week, this year’s negotiations have entered a prolonged phase.<\/p>\n
The Hyundai Motor union will strike for four hours each on the day and night shifts over three days from the 29th to the 31st. This marks the third strike, following stoppages on the 13th to the 15th (two hours each day) and the 20th to the 22nd (four hours each day).<\/p>\n
Labor-management negotiations have shown no progress for three weeks since the 15th round of talks on the 8th of this month. The core reason for the breakdown is the union’s three separate demands: a 50% increase in bonuses, reinstatement of dismissed workers, and an extension of the retirement age.<\/p>\n
Management has maintained its position that it cannot accept those demands. Choi Young-il, Hyundai Motor’s chief executive, earlier set the withdrawal of the union’s three demands as a precondition for resuming negotiations in a statement on the 23rd. Management’s position is that it will present additional wage and performance pay proposals if the union withdraws them. The company’s previous third proposal included a monthly base pay increase of 89,000 won, performance pay of 350% plus 10 million won, and 15 shares of stock.<\/p>\n
The union, meanwhile, is pushing back with strikes, demanding a more forthcoming proposal from management.<\/p>\n
Hyundai Motor’s labor and management will take a summer vacation period during the first week of August. A substantive resumption of negotiations is expected after the middle of next month.
