{"id":103337,"date":"2026-07-29T19:40:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T19:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/103337\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T19:40:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T19:40:27","slug":"chip-stocks-shed-1-trillion-as-selloff-hits-companies-powering-ai-boom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/103337\/","title":{"rendered":"Chip stocks shed $1 trillion as selloff hits companies powering AI boom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">The chip sector has been one of the main beneficiaries of the AI boom, with investors piling into stocks as they looked to capitalize on the huge sums being funnelled into the sector. <\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">The Philadelphia semiconductor index (SOX) \u2014 which tracks the 30 largest U.S.-traded companies involved in the chip sector \u2014 has risen 92% over the past 12 months, despite a nearly 20% drop over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">In total, 20 of the world&#8217;s most valuable chip stocks lost $1.3 trillion since market close on Friday, according to a CNBC analysis using FactSet data. <\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AMD\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AMD<\/a> also shed around $110 billion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSM\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.<\/a> lost $119 billion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">&#8220;This decline appears to be driven largely by sentiment rather than fundamentals,&#8221; said Michael Field, chief equity strategist at Morningstar. <\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">&#8220;Simply put, it&#8217;s loss of confidence,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We continue to see upside in many AI names, but these are growth stocks, and, as such, much of their value comes from cash flows expected far out into the future, which requires a lot of faith from investors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">The sharp sell-off reflects concerns that AI infrastructure spending may be &#8220;peaking faster than expected,&#8221; said Charlie Dai, VP principal analyst at Forrester. Alphabet said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/28\/hyperscalers-face-higher-capex-scrutiny-after-alphabet-report-panned.html\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boost its 2026 capex<\/a> forecast as it rushes to build new AI infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">&#8220;Investors are reassessing whether near-term revenues can justify unprecedented AI spending levels, while some also worry about growing competition in chips and AI infrastructure,&#8221; said Dai. <\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">But, he added, the sell-off is &#8220;less about weakening AI demand and more about a repricing of expectations after an exceptionally strong rally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">Technology stocks in Asia and Europe extended their sell-off on Wednesday, with semiconductor names leading declines after another weak session in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">In South Korea, SK Hynix closed 9.61% lower after dropping over 15%. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/29\/sk-hynix-earnings-profit-revenue-hbm-memory.html\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chip giant missed analysts&#8217; estimates<\/a> despite posting record quarterly profit and revenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">Samsung Electronics lost more than 5%, while LG Innotek fell 10.89% and Seoul Semiconductor dropped 8.89%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">In Europe, chip stocks were mixed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ASML\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ASML<\/a> fell 1.77%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ASM-NL\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ASM International<\/a> fell 3.28% and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BESI-NL\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BESI<\/a> rose 1.67%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">The latest weakness in Asian chip stocks reflects &#8220;the ongoing deleveraging process in Korea and softer sentiment towards global technology stocks,&#8221; said Kieron Poon, investment director of Asian equities at Aberdeen Investments, in a Tuesday note. However, he added that the recent volatility &#8220;has not changed our long-term positive view.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">Japanese chip names also declined. Japan&#8217;s computer memory manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/285A.T-JP\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kioxia<\/a> was down 13.85%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/2760.T-JP\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tokyo Electron<\/a> fell 10.59%, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/9984.T-JP\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SoftBank Group<\/a>, a major AI investment proxy through its stake in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ARM\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arm<\/a>, lost 6.95%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">Taiwan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSM\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TSMC<\/a>, the world&#8217;s largest contract chip manufacturer, was 3.51% lower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">Mainland China&#8217;s tech-heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/159836-CN\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ChiNext 300 index<\/a> gained 1.43%, while the\u00a0 Hang Seng China Semiconductor Chips Index fell 2.5%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">The declines in Asia came on the heels of another weak session for U.S. semiconductor stocks overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nvidia<\/a> sank at the open but closed the session flat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/INTC\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intel<\/a> dropped nearly 6% and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AMD\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AMD<\/a> lost 8%. Memory space names <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MU\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Micron<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/STX\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seagate<\/a> lost more than 8%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/WDC\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Digital<\/a> sank nearly 7% and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SNDK\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandisk<\/a> shed 14%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SKHY\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SK Hynix<\/a>\u00a0U.S. shares dropped 9%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">Despite the sharp pullback, Aberdeen sees the sell-off as an opportunity rather than a deterioration in fundamentals. &#8220;The recent market pullback has brought valuations to more attractive levels, creating opportunities for us to add exposure to high quality businesses at more reasonable prices,&#8221; Poon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">The recent pullback in AI-related chip stocks reflects investors &#8220;giving back a little bit of the froth that was in the AI market,&#8221; David Riedel, founder and president of Riedel Research Group, told CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/asia-squawk-box\/\" class=\"jsx-3336650016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Squawk Box Asia<\/a>&#8221; on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"jsx-3336650016\">While concerns over AI financing and rising Chinese competition have weighed on sentiment, &#8220;the market is healthy,&#8221; he said, adding that memory chipmakers &#8220;will be fine&#8221;
