The appointment is part of a core talent acquisition strategy aimed at realizing software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and physical AI, and Hyundai Motor Group plans to accelerate the advancement of its autonomous driving technology and execution of its future mobility strategy with Kwon’s arrival.

The newly appointed center head Kwon Jung-hyun is an expert with extensive experience in the field of autonomous driving artificial intelligence (AI). He has led the development and commercialization of a broad range of AI technologies used in autonomous driving, including perception software for self-driving vehicles, deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision. At Hyundai Motor Group, Vice President Kwon will assume an overarching role spanning from the development of the group’s core autonomous driving technologies to their productization.

Born in 1980, Kwon graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the same university’s graduate school. After subsequently working at China’s SAIC Motor, among others, he served in Nvidia’s computer vision and software engineering organization from 2018 to 2023, where he was responsible for autonomous driving software development and productization. He moved to Samsung Electronics (005930) in 2023, serving as Managing Director and Vice President while leading intelligent robot development.

Hyundai Motor Group’s latest hire aligns with its broader push to secure leadership in future vehicle technologies by aggressively recruiting talent from global Big Tech companies. The AVP Division is currently spearheaded by President Park Min-woo, who previously led autonomous driving technology development at Nvidia and Tesla, serving as both head of the AVP Division and CEO of 42dot.

Adding to this, on July 1, Hyundai Motor Group recruited Executive Director Kim Dong-wook—who led the development of wireless communication systems for the iPhone, vehicles, and humanoid robotics at Apple and Tesla—as head of the SDV Platform Development Center within the AVP Division. On the same day, Executive Director Jeremy Ma, who led the development and commercialization of robotics and autonomous driving software at Apple, Toyota, and Nvidia, also joined as head of the AVP Division’s Silicon Valley office.

A Hyundai Motor Group official stated, “We are strengthening our technological foundation for realizing physical AI by successively securing core talent in SDVs and autonomous driving.”

Meanwhile, the personnel movement between Hyundai Motor Group and Samsung Electronics is drawing attention. Samsung Electronics recently appointed Lee Dong-gun, a former Hyundai Motor Managing Director who led robotics strategy at Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics affiliate Boston Dynamics, as head of its own Robotics Strategy Team.

Industry observers expect that Hyundai Motor Group’s successive recruitment of world-class AI and autonomous driving talent will provide further momentum to its ongoing SDV transition and autonomous driving technology commercialization efforts. In particular, Vice President Kwon’s experience at Nvidia and Samsung Electronics is anticipated to directly contribute to advancing perception technology and AI models, which are central to autonomous driving software.

Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 30th that it has recruited Kwon Jung-hyun, a veteran of Nvidia and…

[24
53737,27930,295,294,293,51245,53738,53736,2295,27929,1223,276,2195
post-104017","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-hyundai","tag-autonomous-driving-development-center","tag-avp-division","tag-hyundai","tag-hyundai-group","tag-hyundai-motor-group","tag-jeremy-ma","tag-kim-dong-wook","tag-kwon-jung-hyun","tag-nvidia","tag-park-min-woo","tag-physical-ai","tag-samsung-electronics","tag-sdv
["GET
