SEOUL, July 31 (Reuters) – South Korea recorded its highest temperature on Friday since modern weather observations began, as \u200ca prolonged heatwave pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 \u200cdegrees Fahrenheit) for a third straight day in parts of the country.<\/p>\n
The record \u200bwas set in the southeastern city of Yangsan, where temperatures reached 41.4 C at 1:40 p.m. (0440 GMT), according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The reading surpassed the previous national record of 41.0 \u200cC set in Hongcheon \u2060in August 2018.<\/p>\n
Yangsan has now recorded temperatures above 40 C for three consecutive days amid an \u2060intense heatwave affecting much of the country.<\/p>\n
The KMA has issued its highest-level heatwave warning for parts of South Gyeongsang Province, including Yangsan, \u200bwhile heatwave \u200badvisories and warnings remain in \u200beffect across most of \u200cSouth Korea.<\/p>\n
“KMA data records using the ASOS observing system began in 1973, and the 41.4 degrees measured in Yangsan is the highest temperature observed in our records since then,” a KMA spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
The KMA said the extreme heat across the country was \u200ccaused by the simultaneous influence of \u200bthe North Pacific High and the \u200bTibetan High pressure systems, \u200bwhich have covered the Korean Peninsula like a \u200clid, trapping heat and allowing temperatures \u200bto build \u200bacross much of the country while limiting cloud cover.<\/p>\n
Forecasters are also monitoring Typhoon Dolphin in the western Pacific, whose \u200beventual track could influence \u200cweather conditions over the Korean Peninsula next week, although \u200bits impact on the ongoing heatwave remains uncertain.<\/p>\n
