The labor union of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180.KS) will file for labor dispute mediation on the 14th to secure the right to collective action. The move comes as management has made no proposal regarding the union’s collective bargaining demands, and the union’s “special safety demands” have not been accepted amid a series of recent industrial accidents.<\/p>\n

The HD Hyundai Heavy Industries union announced a statement to this effect on the 31st. Earlier, the union had presented collective bargaining demands centered on allocating at least 30% of May’s operating profit as a performance-sharing fund. The union began negotiations with management in June but says there has been little progress.<\/p>\n

The union is pressuring the company by making the non-acceptance of its “special safety demands” a key issue. After three of the company’s workers suffered serious accidents this year, some within the union have argued that existing safety measures focused on enforcement and disciplinary action must be changed. To prevent serious accidents, the union delivered to management a set of four special safety demands: \u25b3union consent when revising safety-related rules, \u25b3conducting substantive risk assessments involving workers, \u25b3measures in the event of a serious accident, and \u25b3guaranteeing the right of subcontracted and migrant workers to work safely.<\/p>\n

Management said it is continuously reviewing the union’s demands and plans to present its position after the summer holidays. The company stressed that clarifying the agenda is more important than a rushed approach. It also explained that, given the growing importance of responding to recent serious accidents, it would approach negotiations on the special safety demands proactively.<\/p>\n

Should the union proceed to strike following the mediation filing, it would be the first such action in about a year, since September last year.
