President Lee Jae-myung and first lady Kim Hye-kyung visited “Korea Street” in Santiago, Chile, on the 30th, spending time connecting with overseas Koreans and local citizens just before departing for Argentina, the final country on their South American tour.<\/p>\n

Presidential Deputy Spokesperson An Gwi-ryeong said in a written briefing that day that citizens they encountered on-site greeted the presidential couple with words such as “Welcome to Chile” and “My grandfather is Korean,” and some asked to take photos together.<\/p>\n

Korea Street is an approximately 600-meter stretch in the Patronato area of downtown Santiago, where the Korean community center and Korean-owned shops are concentrated. The Chile Korean Association promoted the name-change project, and the area was recently changed to Korea Street after going through approval procedures by the district office and district council. President Lee’s visit to Chile added momentum to the designation of Korea Street. Following Seoul Street, established nearby in 2022, the addition of Korea Street has established the area as a symbolic space showcasing the friendship and exchange between Korea and Chile, as well as the footprints of the Korean community in Chile.<\/p>\n

The presidential couple first visited the Chile Korean Association, asking about the association’s activities, crime prevention systems, and the status of overseas polling stations. They then visited a Korean snack shop and a barbecue restaurant run by Koreans, encouraging the merchants. The presidential couple asked citizens, “Is Korean food delicious?” and exchanged greetings by taking commemorative photos and clapping hands together. Citizens exchanged high-fives with the presidential couple one after another.<\/p>\n

The presidential couple also visited a store with a sign reading “pharmacy” in Korean, examining the cosmetics on display and asking about the popularity of K-beauty in Chile.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor and Kia announced that they would each provide one vehicle\u2014the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV5\u2014as patrol cars for nighttime patrols of “Korea Street.” The Chile Korean Association had been hiring a private security company for nighttime patrols using donations from overseas Koreans, but recently faced difficulties raising funds, so merchants had been patrolling themselves. In response, Hyundai Motor Group decided to donate the vehicles and provided electric cars, which have relatively lower maintenance costs than internal combustion engine vehicles.<\/p>\n
