Hanwha (000880.KS) posted weaker earnings in the second quarter than a year earlier, hit by a slump in the construction industry and raw material cost burdens.

Hanwha reported second-quarter operating profit of 113.3 billion won, down 12.6% from the same period a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing on the 4th. Revenue fell 11.4% over the same period to 1.0013 trillion won. Net profit came in at 51 billion won, swinging to a profit from a 32.1 billion won loss in the year-earlier period.

By business division, the construction segment posted second-quarter revenue of 577.4 billion won and operating profit of 58.4 billion won, down 22% and 30% respectively from the same period a year earlier. Hanwha said revenue declined due to the completion of large-scale construction and development projects, while operating profit also fell owing to a base effect from settlements on large project contracts last year.

In the global division, revenue rose 7% year-on-year to 353.5 billion won, but operating profit fell 29% to 4.9 billion won. Revenue improved as prices of petrochemical products rose amid increased geopolitical uncertainty including the war in the Middle East, while operating profit was hit as rising ammonia prices increased manufacturing cost burdens for key products such as nitric acid, ammonium nitrate and explosives.

Hanwha set a minimum dividend of 1,000 won per share on the 4th, and said it would actively consider additional dividends if dividend resources increase going forward. The company plans to generate cash flow through sustainable growth in the defense, aerospace, shipbuilding, renewable energy, petrochemical and finance sectors, as well as through revenue growth and improved return on equity (ROE) in its own businesses such as construction and global.

Exterior view of the Hanwha Building in Jung-gu, Seoul.
