Theoretically, it should allow for a less visible crease after multiple folds and unfolds. We could see this new foldable display tech in next-generation foldables coming in 2027.

According to a report by ZDNet citing industry sources, Samsung Display is working on CTG or Center-etched Thin Glass. As the name suggests, instead of the whole display being thin (UTG), only the central part will be thinned out, as that’s where the crease appears. This should allow for easier folds and a less visible crease. As Samsung works out the kinks, like making the panel appear flat, CTG could be present in the Galaxy Z Fold 9 series of foldables coming out next year.

The report states that the company could apply CTG to some models of the series, which suggests that either the Flip 9 or the Fold 9 may not get the new display tech. Things should become clearer around the fourth quarter of this year.

With the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung managed to slim down the foldable quite a bit and brought the improvements to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 8, leading to record pre-orders.

I have always been passionate about gaming and technology, which drove me towards pursuing a career in the tech writing industry.
