Coupang Inc., the U.S.-based parent of Coupang, recorded an operating loss of 835 billion won in the second quarter of this year. The deterioration in profitability is attributed to a fine of approximately 624.6 billion won imposed on Coupang in June over a personal data breach.<\/p>\n
According to the second-quarter consolidated earnings report Coupang Inc. filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the 4th, second-quarter revenue was 13.3007 trillion won (based on an average quarterly won-dollar exchange rate of 1,501.89 won), up 4% from a year earlier. Excluding exchange rate fluctuations, on a constant-currency basis, growth was 10%.<\/p>\n
However, the operating loss of 835 billion won marked a swing to the red from a year earlier. Following an operating loss of 353.4 billion won in the first quarter, it represents a second consecutive quarter of losses. The second-quarter net loss was 856 billion won, turning to a loss from a net profit of 43.5 billion won a year earlier.<\/p>\n
This is the largest quarterly operating loss and net loss for Coupang Inc. in the five years since its listing in 2021. The cumulative operating loss for the first half also topped 1 trillion won for the first time. This is comparable to the combined operating profit Coupang Inc. earned over the past two years.<\/p>\n
The large-scale loss was heavily affected by the reflection of a fine of 624.681 billion won and a penalty of 16.8 million won that the Personal Information Protection Commission imposed on Coupang in June over the personal data breach. Coupang filed an administrative lawsuit contesting the disposition, but regardless of the lawsuit’s outcome, the fine is reflected as an accounting expense in advance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Coupang CI.
