Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon directly rebutted the ruling party’s criticism that he was “supplying housing only in words,” calling it “the height of audacity.” He stressed that redevelopment projects are needed to expand supply, arguing that the current shortage of housing in Seoul was caused by the cancellation of redevelopment zones during the tenure of former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon.<\/p>\n
On the 7th, Oh posted a statement titled “There Is a Limit to Audacity” on his personal Facebook account, writing: “I could not believe my ears when I heard the remarks of Han Byung-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, today.” He added: “Do you think the public does not know who is responsible for causing the current supply crisis?”<\/p>\n
Earlier, Han Byung-do, acting chief of the Democratic Party and floor leader, criticized the People Power Party at that day’s floor leadership meeting, saying: “Instead of shouting about supply only in words, cooperate with the housing supply bills being pushed by the government and the Democratic Party.” In response, Oh countered: “During the Democratic Party’s 10 years of city administration, 389 redevelopment and reconstruction projects were cancelled.” He added: “As a result, Seoul lost supply opportunities amounting to 430,000 households.” He further pointed out: “Not content with drying up the seeds of supply, they even sprayed herbicide,” adding: “The result is the recent supply cliff, and now that they are trying to shift the blame, their audacity goes beyond all limits.”<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said it had delivered a report titled “Diagnosis of Causes and Countermeasures for the Shortage of Redevelopment and Reconstruction Housing Supply,” containing the content Oh proposed during his meeting with Kim Yong-beom, head of the Presidential Office’s Policy Planning Office, on the 5th. According to the Seoul city government, 389 redevelopment zones in Seoul were cancelled between 2012 and 2020, resulting in the disappearance of approximately 430,000 households in potential supply. For five years from 2016, not a single new housing redevelopment zone was designated in Seoul. As a result, redevelopment project construction, which averaged 29,000 households annually from 2016 to 2020, fell 48.3% to 15,000 households from 2021 to 2025, shrinking to about half.<\/p>\n
