We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has told its public to eat dog-meat soup in a bid to tackle a heatwave gripping the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>State media has portrayed Kim Jong Un as a leader who endures harsh conditions alongside his people while touting everything from dog-meat soup to \u2060chicken broth as ways to cope with high temperatures. <\/p>\n<p>State television reported on Thursday the temperature hit 36.7 degrees Celsius (98.1 degrees Fahrenheit), the highest since weather recordings began in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Media in the country has devoted unusual attention to the hottest weeks of the year, known locally as sambok, or \u2060the dog days of summer.<\/p>\n<p>Among the more eye-catching recommendations is \u200bdog-meat soup, \u2060reflecting a traditional belief that it helps people withstand summer heat. In a health feature published on August 2, ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun quoted a doctor at Pyongyang General Hospital recommending cooling foods such \u2060as watermelon, cucumbers and mung beans, as well as &#8220;nutritious foods&#8221; including dog-meat soup, fish porridge and red-bean porridge.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper \u200bdevoted \u2060a separate feature to dog-meat soup, describing it as \u200ca traditional summertime food and reviving an old saying that &#8220;even if dog-meat soup spills on the top of your foot during the dog days of summer, it becomes medicine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2288215016...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Women use umbrellas to shelter from the sun while walking along Mirae Scientists Street in Pyongyang on August 4, 2026\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Women use umbrellas to shelter from the sun while walking along Mirae Scientists Street in Pyongyang on August 4, 2026 (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The report noted that a national dog-meat cooking competition \u200chad been held earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The state Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) \u200con Wednesday also praised samgyetang, a chicken soup stuffed with ginseng, glutinous rice and jujubes, reporting that Pyongyang restaurants were attracting customers seeking relief from the heat.<\/p>\n<p>Korean Central Television this week also aired segments on managing health during extreme heat, recommending drinks to hydrate and offering advice on swimming and \u2060outdoor exercise.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea has not released data on any heat-related deaths.
