{"id":112574,"date":"2026-08-07T23:33:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:33:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/112574\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:33:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:33:28","slug":"sk-hynix-board-approves-38-billion-investments-for-south-koreas-yongin-cheongju-chip-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/112574\/","title":{"rendered":"SK Hynix board approves $38 billion investments for South Korea&#8217;s Yongin, Cheongju chip plants"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">SEOUL, Aug 7 (Reuters) &#8211; South Korea&#8217;s SK Hynix said on Friday that its board had approved about 54.3 trillion won ($38.30 billion) of \u200cinvestments through 2031, including 35.2 trillion won for the second phase \u200cof construction of its chip fabrication plant in Yongin and 19.1 trillion won for its M17 \u200bchip plant in Cheongju.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">In June, SK Hynix said it planned to invest 600 trillion won in the Yongin semiconductor cluster and 100 trillion won to expand its production base in Cheongju, adding at the time that detailed investment plans and \u200cschedules would be disclosed after \u2060receiving board approval.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The company said Yongin&#8217;s &#8220;Y2 fab&#8221; is the second of four fabrication plants planned for the cluster and will \u2060serve as a production base for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">DRAM, which temporarily stores data for processors, is a critical component in the servers powering the AI \u200bboom.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Construction is \u200bscheduled to begin in July next \u200byear, with the first cleanroom expected \u200cto open in June 2029 to produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and other next-generation DRAM products.
