Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon strongly pushed back against the ruling party, which had blamed him for the housing supply shortage, saying, “It was Mayor Park Won-soon who dismantled Seoul’s supply foundation.” Oh emphasized supply through redevelopment projects, urging the party to listen to voices in the field awaiting such projects.<\/p>\n
On the 7th, Oh posted a statement titled “There is a limit to shifting blame” on his personal Facebook account, writing, “I doubted my ears when I heard Democratic Party Floor Leader Han Byung-do’s remarks today.” He added, “Do you think the public does not know who is responsible for causing the current supply crisis?”<\/p>\n
Earlier that day, Han Byung-do, acting Democratic Party leader and floor leader, criticized the People Power Party at a floor strategy meeting, saying, “Do not just shout about supply in words. Cooperate with the passage of the housing supply bills being pursued by the government and the Democratic Party.” In response, Oh rebutted, “During 10 years of Democratic Party city administration, 389 redevelopment and reconstruction projects were canceled.” He said, “As a result, Seoul lost supply opportunities amounting to 430,000 households.” He further pointed out, “Not content with wiping out the seeds of supply, they even sprayed herbicide on top. The result is the recent supply cliff, and now they try to shift the blame, so the shifting of responsibility goes beyond all bounds.”<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said it delivered a report titled “Diagnosis of Causes of Housing Supply Shortage in Redevelopment and Reconstruction and Countermeasures,” containing proposals Oh made during his meeting with Kim Yong-beom, head of the Presidential Office’s Policy Office, on the 5th. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, as 389 redevelopment zones in Seoul were canceled between 2012 and 2020, about 430,000 households of potential supply disappeared. For five years starting in 2016, there was not a single new designation of a housing redevelopment project in Seoul. As a result, redevelopment project construction starts, which averaged 29,000 households per year from 2016 to 2020, fell 48.3% to 15,000 households from 2021 to 2025, shrinking to about half.<\/p>\n
