The Democratic Party and the People Power Party clashed on the 8th over the cause of Seoul’s housing supply shortage, each blaming current Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and the late former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, respectively.<\/p>\n
Lee Joo-hee, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in a written briefing that day, “During 2022 to 2024, the tenure of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration and Mayor Oh Se-hoon, housing construction starts in Seoul fell to half the 10-year average.” She added, “Mayor Oh should first look back at the report card of the real estate policies he introduced during his five years as Seoul mayor.”<\/p>\n
Lee said, “Apartment construction starts in Seoul averaged 40,000 units over 10 years, but reached only 27,000 units in 2023 and 22,000 units in 2024, and total housing construction volume also plunged 65% from three years earlier.” She argued, “Today’s supply cliff and jeonse and monthly rent crisis began during this period.” She further pointed out that Oh’s pledge upon taking office to supply 360,000 homes over five years amounted to only 39,000 homes per year on average in reality.<\/p>\n
She also addressed the Seoul city government’s lifting of land transaction permit zones in February last year, saying, “The surge in Seoul housing prices began in earnest immediately after the lifting of land transaction permit zones.” She added, “He turns a blind eye to the chaos he brought about and only repeats blaming others.”<\/p>\n
In contrast, Park Sung-hoon, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, countered, “The party responsible for completely destroying Seoul’s housing supply foundation was the past 10 years of Democratic Party city administration.” He said, “During former Mayor Park Won-soon’s tenure, redevelopment and reconstruction were regulated, and 389 maintenance zones were lifted en masse, and as a result, 430,000 units of housing supply opportunities disappeared.”<\/p>\n
Park said, “Destroying the supply foundation and then shifting responsibility to Mayor Oh, who is trying to normalize the collapsed system, is nothing but evasion of responsibility.” He stressed, “As statistics on maintenance projects completed over the past three years show, redevelopment and reconstruction produced a net increase effect of about 20,000 housing units.”<\/p>\n
