As the KOSDAQ has surged and related ETFs have posted high returns, cash is concentrating in KOSDAQ index and leverage products.

The five best-performing domestic ETFs from July 31 through the 7th of this month were all KOSDAQ leverage products, according to the Korea Exchange on the 10th. RISE KOSDAQ150 Futures Leverage led with a 63% gain, followed by HANARO KOSDAQ150 Futures Leverage (62.42%), KODEX KOSDAQ150 Leverage (61.41%), TIGER KOSDAQ150 Leverage (60.72%) and KIWOOM KOSDAQ150 Futures Leverage (59.05%). The KOSDAQ index rose 23.89% over the period, double the KOSPI’s 11.89% gain.

Analysts say the higher barrier to entry for single-stock leverage helped improve the flow of funds into the KOSDAQ. After 16 single-stock leverage products launched on May 27, average daily KOSDAQ trading volume fell from 16.25 trillion won on May 26 to 4.49 trillion won on July 30. The situation reversed after the minimum deposit was raised to 30 million won from 10 million won on July 31. Trading value in single-stock leverage products plunged from 12.45 trillion won on July 30 to 3.15 trillion won on July 31, the day the rules took effect, then fell further to 845.2 billion won on August 7.

Fund flows also diverged. From July 31 through August 6, KODEX KOSDAQ150 and KODEX KOSDAQ150 Leverage drew net inflows of 423.7 billion won and 181.7 billion won, respectively, ranking second and fifth among all ETFs by net inflows. Among single-stock leverage products, the only one to place within the top 100 by inflows was 1Q SK hynix Futures Single-Stock Leverage (4.4 billion won, 82nd).

“As single-stock leverage absorbed KOSDAQ liquidity, trading value fell and the slump deepened, but with trading declining after the new rules, a reversal of the KOSDAQ’s oversold position is worth expecting,” said Park Woo-yeol, a researcher at Shinhan Investment Corp.

Market Signal

Yonhap News Money is flowing into South Korea’s KOSDAQ market, long overlooked, after tighter rules on single-stock leverage…

[3
58641,58643,337,58640,15299,58642,112,11780
post-113961","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-seoul","tag-etf-fund-flows","tag-kodex-kosdaq150","tag-korea-exchange","tag-kosdaq-leverage-etf","tag-kosdaq150","tag-minimum-deposit-rule","tag-seoul","tag-single-stock-leverage
["GET
