Hyundai Wia<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">A consortium formed by Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), Hyundai Wia (011210.KS) and Hyundai Engineering &amp; Construction (000720.KS) will run a parking-robot pilot program at Hillstate The Wave City, an apartment complex in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, the Hyundai Motor Group said on the 10th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The project aims to develop a parking-operation model that addresses the shortage of parking spaces, congestion and safety problems that arise at apartment complexes and similar buildings, using robotic technology. It is the first such trial in South Korea to receive state funding through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport&#8217;s smart-city regulatory sandbox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The Hyundai Motor Group will operate two sets of Hyundai Wia parking robots in a separate 53-space section of the first basement level parking garage at Hillstate The Wave City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Hyundai Wia&#8217;s parking robot works as a pair of thin, wide units, each 110 millimeters thick, that slide under a vehicle, lift its wheels and move it. When a driver parks in a designated pickup and drop-off area, the robot automatically recognizes the vehicle and transports it to an empty space. To retrieve the car, the robot moves it back to the pickup and drop-off area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The robot uses a LiDAR sensor to precisely identify the size and position of a vehicle&#8217;s wheels before lifting it. It also plans to assess the effects on traffic flow, space use, user experience and safety, and economic benefits from a smart-city perspective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The Hyundai Motor Group expects the parking robots to cut the time spent searching for empty spaces and to boost parking capacity by 20% to 50% within the same floor area. It also expects to lower the risk of accidents inside parking garages by separating vehicle and pedestrian paths, and to achieve environmental benefits such as reduced carbon emissions and fine dust by minimizing unnecessary vehicle movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The data from the trial will be used to flesh out proposals for revising laws and rules on parking robots, and to build operating models for various types of parking spaces, including residential, commercial, office, transit-hub, public and cultural buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">&#8220;This apartment-complex parking-robot trial goes beyond simple technology verification; it is an important step toward building a new parking paradigm for the smart-city era,&#8221; an official at the Hyundai Motor Group said. &#8220;By comprehensively verifying the operational stability, efficiency and user convenience of parking robots in a real living environment such as an apartment complex, we plan to develop a standard model that can be expanded to various urban spaces at home and abroad.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Hyundai Wia parking robot transports a vehicle at Hyundai Motor Group&#8217;s Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia.
