{"id":115016,"date":"2026-08-10T21:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T21:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/115016\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T21:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T21:04:09","slug":"us-soldiers-marines-test-explosive-drones-in-south-korea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/korea\/115016\/","title":{"rendered":"US soldiers, Marines test explosive drones in South Korea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">U.S. troops in Korea practiced turning small drones into weapons with live ordnance last week as the Army works to incorporate unmanned capabilities into the lowest levels of unit formations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Soldiers with the 2nd Infantry Division\/ROK-U.S. Combined Division trained alongside Marines to outfit Neros Archer Strike first-person-view, or FPV, drones with C4 explosives to attack targets at Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in South Korea. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">It was the division\u2019s first time using live ordnance with the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The training represents part of the military\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/07\/07\/marine-corps-creates-new-small-drone-training-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broader push<\/a> to place attack drones directly in the hands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/05\/08\/as-the-us-army-adds-drones-to-formations-heres-how-one-base-trains-its-operators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2026\/05\/08\/as-the-us-army-adds-drones-to-formations-heres-how-one-base-trains-its-operators\/\">smaller units<\/a>, giving them the ability to strike targets without relying on assets at higher echelons. Both the Marine Corps and the Army have created specialized units and groups dedicated to the small sky-fliers that have changed the course of modern warfare. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cAt my level, the modernization with drones is allowing for on-the-ground troops to, rather than call in company-level or battalion-level assets, within their platoon or squad-sized element, be able to support long-range fires up to 20 kilometers,\u201d said Pfc. Gavin Zerrull, a military intelligence systems maintainer and integrator who participated in the training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Zerrull is also an FPV coach and operator with Talon Technologies, the \u201cinnovation arm\u201d of the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, according to the Army\u2019s early August release. The effort assesses unmanned aircraft systems for one-way strike missions, intelligence collection, surveillance and cargo delivery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Neros Archer Strike drones are made for long-range missions. As seen in photos released by the Army, the drone is small enough to be carried in one hand, with spindly, spider-like legs and antennas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">According to Zerrull, the platform has already been used in the war between Russia and Ukraine, where drones dominate the battlefield. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cWhat makes this different from a typical drone training event is the fact that we\u2019re working with live ordnance and using a platform that has actively been tested in real-world situations in Ukraine,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__BioWrapper-sc-cy7r53-0 eATlTY a-body2\">Eve Sampson is a reporter and former Army officer.
