Naver Webtoon is accelerating its push into gaming, drawing on its portfolio of globally popular webtoon intellectual property.<\/p>\n

Webtoon Entertainment, the parent company of Naver Webtoon, said on the 11th that it had signed a strategic investment agreement with RI Games Holdings on the 10th. Once the deal closes, Webtoon Entertainment will hold a 60% stake in RI Games Holdings.<\/p>\n

The investment gives Webtoon Entertainment the development capabilities and business foundation to expand its webtoon intellectual property, which commands global fan followings, into games. Over the next four years, the two companies plan to jointly develop and release multiple new games based on popular webtoon IP.<\/p>\n

RI Games Holdings oversees two development studios, GrayGames and Offbeat.<\/p>\n

The launch lineup includes games based on the hits “The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor” (1.3 billion global views) and “The Reincarnated Assassin” (590 million global views), as well as Naver Webtoon’s mega-hit “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint” (3.05 billion global views). This is part of a franchise strategy that expands webtoons into both animation and games, alongside planned animated adaptations.<\/p>\n

The first project is an action massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on the globally popular webtoon “The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor.” Developed by GrayGames and published by Nexon, it is targeting a global launch this year. The strategy is to accelerate IP expansion through an animated series set to air in October and a game launch within the year, while further broadening the global fan base.<\/p>\n

“Webtoons are where global fandoms begin, and this investment will play a leading role in growing great stories into global franchises,” said Junkoo Kim, founder and CEO of Naver Webtoon and Webtoon Entertainment. He added that games are one of the most immersive ways to engage fans, and that turning stories fans already love into games is a powerful way to reach new users around the world, further cementing webtoons’ track record of building successful global franchises spanning animation, TV, film and publishing, and now games.<\/p>\n

RI Games Holdings was founded in 2022 by Han Tae-il, who founded Redice Studio, the producer of major webtoon titles such as “Solo Leveling” and “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.” The company is developing games aimed at the global market with a top-tier development team behind hit titles including “MapleStory M,” “Tower of God: New World,” “The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross,” “Lineage W” and “Aion.”<\/p>\n
