SEOUL, Aug 12 (Reuters) – South Korea unveiled on Wednesday an ambitious technology strategy centred \u200con seven projects ranging from nuclear \u200cenergy and quantum computing to space and biotechnology, as the \u200bcountry seeks to secure new growth engines beyond semiconductors and AI.<\/p>\n
The “Seven Major SEED” initiative, announced at a Blue House meeting chaired by President \u200cLee Jae Myung, \u2060brings together goals including commercial deployment of indigenous small modular reactors by \u20602035, a moon landing by 2030, development of a domestic 100-qubit quantum computer by 2029 and \u200bcommercialisation of \u200bbrain-computer interface products \u200bby 2035.<\/p>\n
The seven projects \u200ccover small modular reactors, fusion energy, next-generation renewable energy, quantum technology, space and aviation, advanced biotechnology, and critical minerals and materials supply chains, Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said.<\/p>\n
The plan comes as \u200cSouth Korea looks to \u200bprepare for slower long-term economic \u200bgrowth and \u200bintensifying global competition in emerging technologies \u200cthat governments increasingly view as \u200bcritical to \u200bboth economic competitiveness and national security.<\/p>\n
“We will help these seeds grow and build a \u200bSouth Korea \u200cthat no one can rival in 10 \u200bor 20 years,” Bae said.<\/p>\n
