Photo courtesy of Naver<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Naver (035420.KS) is accelerating its push to secure artificial intelligence infrastructure, including an investment in Pantalassa, a U.S. startup developing offshore AI data centers powered by wave energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Naver said on the 13th that it had invested in Pantalassa through the U.S. venture capital firm 8090 Industries. Founded in 2016, Pantalassa is developing an eco-friendly data center model that can generate continuous electricity using wave power. As surging electricity demand from data centers has made securing power the biggest challenge, the model has drawn attention because it produces electricity without a separate power plant or fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Pantalassa has built the core functions needed to construct and operate an AI data center \u2014 from power generation to AI computation, processing and cooling \u2014 onto a floating offshore Node platform. As a floating data center, it can cut costs such as the land needed to build a data center, making it more cost-efficient than land-based facilities. It uses seawater for server cooling, allowing it to replace the cooling equipment that accounts for a large share of power use at land-based data centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">The Node can also carry out AI workloads such as computation and processing directly, without separate power transmission infrastructure. The results are transmitted to the ground via low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communication networks such as Starlink. LEO satellites have low latency, making them suitable for AI inference tasks that require fast responses, and they enable global communication without undersea cables, easing geographic constraints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Pantalassa has conducted offshore demonstrations through wave-power generation platforms including &#8220;Ocean-1&#8221; and &#8220;Ocean-2.&#8221; It plans to deploy its &#8220;Ocean-3&#8221; platform for demonstration within this year, targeting commercialization in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon said, &#8220;Naver is expanding into AI data centers and rapidly securing differentiated data center infrastructure.&#8221; Choi added, &#8220;We will proactively invest in next-generation technologies such as wave-power-based renewable-energy AI data centers to strengthen our competitiveness in the global AI infrastructure market on multiple fronts.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Naver and Panta Rhei logos.
