LG Innotek has begun mass production of camera modules for humanoid robots at its Paju plant in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The move is part of the company’s strategy to expand its mobile-centric camera module business into physical artificial intelligence (AI) sectors such as robotics and autonomous driving.<\/p>\n
According to industry sources on the 13th, LG Innotek is currently producing camera modules at its Paju plant for supply to a North American humanoid robot manufacturer. The supply volume is in the tens of thousands of units, with each of the customer’s robots reportedly equipped with five to eight camera modules in the head, hands, and other locations.<\/p>\n
The customer is a humanoid robotics startup that has recently drawn significant industry attention and has already unveiled a development-version finished product. The company is preparing not only development versions but also mass-production models, meaning LG Innotek’s supply volume could expand substantially once mass production of the humanoid robot ramps up.<\/p>\n
Camera modules are core sensing components essential for robots to perceive surrounding spaces and objects. For humanoid robots to accurately recognize their environment, high-value integrated sensing modules combining camera modules, LiDAR, and radar in the head are required. Ultra-compact camera modules are also mounted in robot hands for object recognition.<\/p>\n
Camera modules for humanoid robots must be competitive in minimizing robot weight and improving battery efficiency. At the same time, unit costs must be reduced to enable future mass production. LG Innotek plans to accelerate its push into the humanoid market by leveraging camera module technology accumulated in the mobile and automotive markets.<\/p>\n
Paju Plant Repositioned as Physical AI Sensing Hub<\/p>\n
LG Innotek operates production facilities in Gumi, Paju, and Gwangju in South Korea. While the Gumi plant primarily handles mobile camera module production, the Paju plant is expanding its scope as a production base for physical AI sensing components for robotics and autonomous driving.<\/p>\n
The Paju plant has previously produced 3D sensing modules for extended reality (XR) and camera modules for vehicles. The company plans to operate the facility as a production hub for physical AI sensing solutions specialized in integrated sensing modules for autonomous driving and robotics.<\/p>\n
The global robotics industry is targeting large-scale mass production of humanoid robots between 2027 and 2028. Once humanoid robots are widely deployed, competition for orders among robot component suppliers is expected to intensify. Multiple component makers are reportedly already in discussions to supply parts to global robot manufacturers.<\/p>\n
In addition to this customer, LG Innotek is supplying camera modules to other robot manufacturers and pursuing additional orders.<\/p>\n
Physical AI Total Solution Strategy<\/p>\n
LG Innotek plans to strengthen its physical AI total solution business by supplying not only sensing components such as camera modules but also connectivity communication modules and semiconductor substrates as a package. The strategy is to preempt the emerging physical AI market by providing customized turnkey solutions tailored to customer needs.<\/p>\n
The company is also reviewing external partnerships and investments to strengthen its competitiveness in the robot components business.
