SK Chemicals

SK Chemicals (285130.KS) shares surged nearly 15% in intraday trading on the 14th after the company posted second-quarter results that far exceeded market expectations. Growth in its core green chemicals business, along with a narrower loss at SK Bioscience and a swing to profit at SK Multi Utility, is seen as having lifted investor sentiment.

As of 2:44 p.m. on the 14th, SK Chemicals was trading at 50,300 won, up 14.71% from the previous session, according to the Korea Exchange.

SK Chemicals reported second-quarter revenue of 745.1 billion won ($539 million) and operating profit of 32.3 billion won on a consolidated basis, the company said the previous day. Revenue rose 24.8% from a year earlier, while operating profit swung to a profit from a loss in the same period last year. The operating profit far exceeded the market forecast of a 700 million won loss compiled by financial data provider FnGuide. On a standalone basis, the company posted revenue of 479.1 billion won and operating profit of 31.9 billion won, its highest quarterly revenue since it was spun off as an operating company in 2017.

By segment, the green chemicals division recorded operating profit of 24.4 billion won, up 12% from the previous quarter. Higher sales volumes of copolyester and monomer, along with rising selling prices, drove the results. The operating loss at subsidiary SK Bioscience also narrowed sharply to 15.7 billion won, far smaller than Samsung Securities’ estimate of a 39.5 billion won loss.

SK Multi Utility’s improvement was also notable. In a recent report, Samsung Securities estimated SK Multi Utility’s second-quarter revenue and operating profit at 113.5 billion won and 21.3 billion won, respectively. That marked a swing to profit from a 3.4 billion won operating loss in the previous quarter. The gain reflected a rise in the system marginal price (SMP) and the start of power sales in mid-second quarter to new customers within a distributed energy special zone.

The outlook for third-quarter earnings is also positive. Samsung Securities forecast SK Chemicals’ third-quarter operating profit at 30.7 billion won, 19% above the market consensus of 25.9 billion won. The brokerage expects one-off costs at green chemicals to disappear and SK Multi Utility to maintain its improved profit level.

However, reflecting recent weakening in investor sentiment toward the chemicals sector, Samsung Securities cut its target price by 15% to 68,000 won from 80,000 won. The move stemmed from applying a wider discount relative to peers and a larger net asset value (NAV) discount to the value of subsidiary stakes. “Considering the improved results, the current undervaluation appeal will only be amplified,” said Cho Hyun-ryul, an analyst at Samsung Securities.

.

A view of SK Chemicals’ headquarters in Pangyo.
