ULSAN \u2014 Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and its labor union are returning to the negotiating table after a standoff that had erupted into major production disruptions as workers came back from summer vacation. The union agreed to management’s abrupt request for talks, suspending a strike planned for the 18th and reopening negotiations after more than 40 days.<\/p>\n
Management formally requested a resumption of talks at the union office on the 14th, according to both sides. Chief Executive Officer Choi Young-il visited the site and proposed breaking the stalled dialogue, and the union accepted, setting the main bargaining session for the 18th. It marks the first official talks in 41 days, since the 15th round of negotiations broke down on July 8.<\/p>\n
With the decision to resume talks, the union agreed to suspend the six-hour partial strike it had planned for the 18th. After staging four-hour strikes by shift on the 12th and 13th, immediately after returning from vacation, the union had been preparing to raise the pressure by extending strikes to six hours on the 14th and 18th. The two sides plan to hold preliminary talks between working-level teams to narrow differences before the main session on the 18th.<\/p>\n
Still, the prospect of a full-scale strike resuming remains high if the renewed talks fail to produce a breakthrough. Management has put forward an offer worth an average of 36.3 million won ($26,000) per worker, including a base pay increase of 89,000 won, a bonus of 350% plus 10 million won, and a grant of 15 shares.<\/p>\n
