Photo courtesy of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Yeo Han-koo, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy&#8217;s top trade negotiator who has led South Korea&#8217;s tariff talks with the United States, has been removed from his post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Analysts described the move as highly unusual, given the pile of pending trade issues \u2014 including nearly $200 billion in investment pledged to the United States, additional tariffs under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act, legislation targeting Coupang and online platforms, and a review of possible membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) \u2014 that made the replacement of the responsible vice-ministerial official striking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">A ministry official said on the 15th that the ministry had been notified the previous day by the Ministry of Personnel Management that Yeo had been dismissed from office, effective midnight on the 15th. &#8220;This was a decision by the appointing authority, so we do not know the specific reasons behind it,&#8221; the official said, adding that the ministry would do its best to prevent any gap in operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Yeo, who served as director-general of the ministry&#8217;s trade policy bureau and as trade negotiator under the Moon Jae-in administration, was reappointed as trade negotiator with the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration. Together with Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Kim Jung-kwan, Yeo went on to help secure a South Korea-U.S. trade agreement and, more recently, took a leading role in responding to the European Union&#8217;s new steel measures. Having also attended an emergency economic headquarters meeting held jointly with a meeting of economy-related ministers at the Government Complex Seoul on the 13th, Yeo&#8217;s sudden replacement has drawn attention to the reasoning behind the presidential office&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-[var(--color-text)] leading-relaxed\">Meanwhile, the presidential office recently convened a meeting of officials from relevant ministries to address U.S. pressure stemming from delays in the $200 billion in investment pledged to the United States under the South Korea-U.S. agreement.
