Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party. Yonhap News

Rep. Na Kyung-won of the People Power Party sharply criticized President Lee Jae-myung’s proposal for multilateral talks to formally end the Korean War, calling it “a reckless act of self-harm that dismantles the nation’s own security framework.”

President Lee made the proposal to North Korea in his Liberation Day address, calling for “multilateral discussions to bring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War.”

Na made the remarks in a Facebook post on the 16th, writing that “President Lee’s ill-intentioned war-end proposal will hasten the end of the Lee Jae-myung administration.”

“North Korea is still advancing its nuclear threats and continuing its ballistic missile provocations, while responding to South Korea only with cynicism and openly persisting in bypassing the South Korean government,” Na said. “The more we disarm ourselves and beg for a pie-in-the-sky declaration ending the war, the more North Korea and the United States will skip over South Korea and deal directly with each other.” She added that “our place in the international community and in the security landscape of the Korean Peninsula will disappear entirely.”

On the security consequences of a war-end declaration without denuclearization, Na stressed that “the domino effect is clear.”

“A unilateral declaration that the war is over will soon lead to a weakening of the standing of the United Nations Command, which manages the armistice agreement, and to pressure for its dissolution,” Na said. “If the multinational tripwire that allows the international community to intervene immediately in a contingency disappears, even the legal and political justification for the U.S. military presence in Korea will be shaken. It will lead to the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Korea.”

Na went on to say, “When the Moon Jae-in administration also pushed for a war-end declaration, I rushed to the United States, met with figures such as White House National Security Adviser John Bolton and actively persuaded U.S. political and public circles, taking the lead in blocking the declaration.”

“True deterrence comes not from an enemy’s goodwill but from our own overwhelming strength,” Na said, urging the immediate restoration of full-scale South Korea-U.S. combined field training exercises and strategic coordination with the United Nations Command, along with a complete overhaul of modern warfare response systems such as drones and electronic warfare, as demonstrated in the war in Ukraine. “We must secure the right to enrich uranium and reprocess spent nuclear fuel through a revision of the South Korea-U.S. nuclear energy agreement, and actively consider options including independent nuclear armament and expanding nuclear latency, so as to swiftly build up genuine strategic deterrence capability,” she stressed.

She concluded, “Do not beg North Korea for a fake peace. Build an overwhelming defense capability and a firm South Korea-U.S. alliance that keep the enemy from even daring to dream of provocation.” She added, “Real peace can be secured only through our own strength.”

Rep.
