Solid support from fellow lawmakers was behind the new leader Kim Min-seok’s victory at the August 17 National Convention of the Democratic Party of Korea. In the second year of the Lee Jae Myung administration, many Democratic Party lawmakers actually supported Kim and helped the campaign with the consensus that the disagreement between the presidential office and the ruling party should be minimized.<\/p>\n

However, representative Kim’s election camp itself was set up relatively slimmer than growing its appearance like the past national convention. Distanced from the so-called “three shows” and “line up,” the first and second-term lawmakers who were with President Lee Jae Myung when he served as the party leader and presidential candidate were placed at the front of the camp.<\/p>\n

According to the political circle on the 17th, the person in charge of the entire working-level of Kim’s camp is Kim Won-i, a second-term lawmaker. After publicly expressing his support for Kim, Kim also resigned as chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Party to avoid unnecessary controversy during the election process.<\/p>\n

First-term lawmaker Yeom Tae-young was in charge of the situation. Even before starting his official campaign, Yeom began supporting Kim by urging then-CEO Chung Chung-rae to resign before forming a preparatory committee for the national convention through his social network service (SNS). The camp was responsible for diagnosing the entire situation and responding to major issues.<\/p>\n

First-term lawmaker Lee Yong-woo communicated with the media by acting as a spokesman for the camp. Reps. Kim Tae-sun, Kim Yong-man, and Jeon Eun-soo are said to have been in charge of the performance. In particular, Rep. Kim Tae-sun even served as Kim’s chief of staff based on his past relationship as a chief of staff when he was the party leader of President Lee.<\/p>\n

It is known that Yoon Jong-gun, the first-term lawmaker, was in charge of the election strategy. Analysts say that he helped Kim win the election by coordinating his primary strategy and message from the process of running for office.<\/p>\n

Rep. Moon Jin-seok, a second-term lawmaker, is also considered a major supporter. Rep. Moon actively engaged in public opinion campaigns through social media, including publicly refuting Choi Min-hee’s remarks on the “infiltration of Ilbe culture at the joint speech” by Supreme Council member, who is classified as pro-Cheonggye. It is said that it also played a role in securing the party’s spirit in Chungcheongnam-do.<\/p>\n

Senior lawmakers also gave Kim a boost. Rep. Park Beom-gye, a fourth-term lawmaker, joined Kim when he officially announced his candidacy on the 6th of last month and also supported him during the primary. During the campaign, Chairman Kim also publicly mentioned that Park is the right person if he creates an organization to take charge of integration and harmony within the party.<\/p>\n

Representatives Ahn Ho-young, re-elected representatives Kim Seung-won and Park Sung-joon, and first-term representatives Kim Moon-soo, Lee Kun-tae, Jung Jin-wook, and Jo Gye-won also supported representative Kim through SNS.<\/p>\n

There was also support from outside personnel. Kang Hee-yong, former secretary for political affairs and cooperation at the Prime Minister’s Office, is said to have been in charge of message management at the camp. Former lawmaker Cho Oh-seop, who served as chief of staff to National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik, also publicly declared his support for Kim.<\/p>\n

Han Woong-hyun, a former managing director of LG Electronics’ Korea Brand Communication, is said to have been in charge of the promotion strategy. Former chairman Han played a role in conveying the camp’s message to the outside world by directing the overall promotion strategy of representative Kim during the election process.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Kim won the national convention held at the Daejeon Convention Center with 54.08 percent of the final vote, beating Chung Chung-rae (45.92 percent). Representative Kim failed to win a majority in the first round of voting and won the party’s leadership after a runoff election through a preference vote.<\/p>\n

The preferred voting system specifies the first to third candidates according to their preference, and if there is no majority of the votes, the second-priority candidates of the voters who voted for the lowest number of votes are added together to determine the winner.<\/p>\n

The party leadership election was ranked by adding 70% of the votes of delegates and rights members and 30% of the public opinion poll.<\/p>\n
