The move comes as global electricity demand surges amid the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, positioning the South Korean builder to capture a leading share of the next-generation nuclear market.

Hyundai E&C announced on the 18th that it signed a master agreement with TerraPower for the execution of the Natrium reactor project, the company’s next-generation nuclear reactor, with CEO Lee Han-woo and TerraPower CEO Chris Levesque in attendance.

Under the agreement, the two companies will expand cooperation in the nuclear power sector and jointly explore new business opportunities. Hyundai E&C also secured rights as the EPC partner for up to eight follow-on Natrium units that TerraPower is planning.

TerraPower is a U.S. nuclear company that holds fourth-generation nuclear technology based on sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR), which use liquid sodium as a coolant. Having received construction approval for a fourth-generation reactor from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the company is building the 345 MW “Kemmerer Unit 1” in Wyoming.

The Natrium reactor is designed to integrate the reactor with an energy storage system, allowing output to be adjusted based on electricity demand. TerraPower is expanding related projects to respond to power demand from AI data centers and other sources.

Hyundai E&C plans to discuss with TerraPower the construction of follow-on units to Kemmerer Unit 1 as well as joint marketing in global markets.

In a related development, CEO Lee met with Bill Gates, chairman of TerraPower’s board, CEO Levesque, and HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun in Seoul on the 14th to discuss commercialization of the Natrium reactor and overseas business expansion. The three companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in May for cooperation on next-generation nuclear power projects. Hyundai E&C is cooperating in the EPC field, while HD Hyundai is responsible for manufacturing core nuclear equipment.

A Hyundai E&C official said, “Combining TerraPower’s nuclear technology with Hyundai E&C’s global EPC capabilities will serve as an important milestone in responding to surging electricity demand and accelerating the commercialization of next-generation nuclear power.”

Hyundai E&C has been involved in large-scale nuclear power plants, small modular reactor (SMR) projects, and nuclear decommissioning. With this agreement, the company has expanded its business scope into the sodium-cooled fast reactor segment.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction has secured priority rights for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) on up to eight…

[24
10352,16537,722,752,295,15637,294,293,63962,15639,16541,16759,14727
post-123654","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-hyundai","tag-bill-gates","tag-chris-levesque","tag-chung-ki-sun","tag-hd-hyundai","tag-hyundai","tag-hyundai-engineering-construction","tag-hyundai-group","tag-hyundai-motor-group","tag-kemmerer-unit-1","tag-lee-han-woo","tag-natrium-reactor","tag-sodium-cooled-fast-reactor","tag-terrapower
["GET
